Welcome

The Mission of the Humanists of Hemet and San Jacinto (HHSJ) is to promote Humanism, build nontheistic community, and to encourage and facilitate the advancement of humanist thought and action in the Hemet-San Jacinto region of Riverside County and its surrounding areas.

We will promote activities that educate about Humanism and secular values and work to create opportunities for humanists to act on these values while serving the needs of our local communities.

One of our goals is to become a regular chapter of the American Humanist Association which has stood as the voice of humanism in the United States since 1945. We strive to bring about a society where being good without a god is an accepted and respected way to live life. We are accomplishing this through our defense of civil liberties and secular governance, by our outreach to the growing number of people without traditional religious faith, and through a continued refinement and advancement of the humanist worldview.

Humanism is a nontheistic worldview with ethical values informed by scientific knowledge and driven by a desire to meet the needs of people in the here and now. At the foundation of those values is an affirmation of the dignity of every human being.

“Humanism is a democratic and ethical life stance that affirms that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives. Humanism stands for the building of a more humane society through an ethics based on human and other natural values in a spirit of reason and free inquiry through human capabilities. Humanism is not theistic, and it does not accept supernatural views of reality.”

The Minimum Statement on Humanism, Humanists International

We count humanists and other nontheists as the core of our movement but are always willing to work with friends and allies on issues of common concern. The positions we hold and the actions we take are not simply for our own benefit, but for the betterment of all of society and the world in which we live.
